Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 DB, Server and Site Failure

$

Hello All........Consider following setup:

Only Site A is internet facing.  There is single namespace for all URLs. Site B CAS Servers are not utilized at all.  mail.contoso.com DNS Record point to HLB on Site A, hence essentially all users (Site A and B) are both hitting Site A HLB.

Considering above setup, I have few questions:

1.  Can this setup survive database, server and site failures?

2.  If not, what steps would be required to achieve all of the three failure scenarios?

3.  I want to test each of three scenarios, how can I achieve that?

Thanks in advance.

Activating Mailbox Database at a Site with no CAS Server from same DAG - Exchange 2013

Hello All...... I have an environment where there are two-2 DAGs (DAG1 and DAG2). Both DAGs have similar configuration i.e. they have three-3 members each with two-2 being MBX and CAS and on-1 member being just the MBX.  The combined roles hold the active copies of the databases while single MBX just hold the passive copy of the databases which are active at the combined roles.  There are two-2 Sites with each site holding combined roles as well as single MBX.  DAG active passive configuration is such that Site A's combined Servers have passive copies on Site B's single MBX Server and similarly combined servers of Site B have passive copy on single MBX server on Site B.

Questions:

1.  If I were to activate the passive copy at MBX Server, would everything work fine?  Or besides the activation, I need to do something else as well to make the mailboxes connect to server?

2.  Just to be clear when database is activated on the single MBX Server, there would not be any CAS server part of that DAG on thatSite either A or B.  Can that cause an issue?  Should there always be a CAS Server part of the same DAG where there is active mailbox database per site?

3.  OR just a single CAS Server in environment is enough to provide service to users irrespective of how many DAGs are in the Site?

4.  Do we need at least one CAS on each of the sites that hold DAG members? So that they can serve databases that are switched to that particular site?

 THanks in advance.

Event ID 1006 MSExchangeDiagnostics performance counter errors

I get a lot of these, not sure if it is just another exchange performance counter error or if it means something else is wrong.

The performance counter '\\MailServer\MSExchange OAuth(w3wp_msexchangeservicesapppool)\Inbound: Failed Auth Requests Total' sustained a value of '473.00', for the '10' minute(s) interval starting at '10/18/2016 6:43:00 PM'. Additional information: None. Trigger Name:OAuthRequestFailureTrigger. Instance:w3wp_msexchangeservicesapppool

How to fix?

Understanding Passive and Lagged Copies

Hello All.........I have following questions with respect to Passive and Lagged Copies:

1.  Can a passive copy have some sort of delay configured to it that it only sync with active copy after 1 hours for example?

2.  If above is true, how are lagged copies different from passive copies?

3.  If above is not true then can DAG have just active copies and lagged copies and no passive copies?

4.  If passive copies can have some sort of delay set in them to sync with active copies after some time then would activation and access to mailbox from users be any different?  OR it would be the same as active/passive with no delay set?

5.  How can I check how many active, passive and lagged copies I have?

6.  How can I change passive copies delay time so that they sync in real-time?

7.  Is there any script or tool to verify health of database copies?

8.  When database copies are shifted from one server to another i.e. from one server to another server in some other site, what other things should be in place? such as CAS and access to URLs? Which CAS Servers would be hit after planned failover?

Thanks in advance.

DAG Failure Sustainability

Hello All..........I have questions with respect to how many failure a DAG can manage:

Consider following:

DAG has three-3 servers, two-2 on Site A and one-1 on Site B.

1.  How many servers failures my DAG can sustain?

2.  If Site A goes down, would Site B be up automatically or would I need to do something manually?

3.  There is a formula often people use for clustering 2 n - 1, how can that be used to understand the number of failure a cluster can take?

4.  How to easily calculate as to how many failure a cluster can withhold?

Thanks in advance.

LAG REPLAY Settings

Hello All..........I have question with respect to settings of LAG Copies.  Some of my databases are set with LAG REPLAY TIME of 3 days and I want to change it back to passive copy that is with real-time copying:

1.  Is "Set-MailboxDatabaseCopy -Identity MBX01\SERVER02 -ReplayLagTime 0.0:0:0"  CMDLET good enough?

2.  Do I need to do something before or after the command?

3.  If I try to activate the above copy with 3 days lag set, what would happen? Would it allow me to do so?

Thanks in advance.

Exchange Server 2013 Site Resiliency Testing

$

Hello All...........I have a few questions with regards to site resiliency failover and failback.

Setup:

Sites and Servers:  I have two-2 sites (A and B) with three-3 servers on each site which include 2 MBX and CAS and 1 just MBX.

DAG:  There are two-2 DAGs each containing three-3 servers.  Two-2 servers that are MBX and CAS on each site have the third partner from the other site that is just holding the MBX role.

Internet Facing:  Site A is internet facing.  All e-mail is sent and received from this site.  There is no connectivity from Site B to the outside world.  It relay or gets relayed everything to and fro through Site A.

Routing and Access:  At Site A, there is a Load Balancer in place for CAS load balancing which only includes CAS servers of Site A.  E-mail is sent from these CAS servers to the outside world.  For Web Access (OWA, etc.), TMG is being used for external users.  Internal users directly access Load Balancer to get service.

Question:  I want to test site failure that is from Site B to Site A.  As there is little dependency on internet routing and access, I believe there is only DAG part to worry about.  Kindly, confirm if I have the correct understanding.  I want to mimic the failure at Site B and serve all the clients from Site A.  How can I achieve this goal.
Thanks in advance.

Hello All.........Is there any issue with keeping Form-based authentication for OWA and ECP if we are to use TMG for Publishing?

I have seen some companies not use it because of publishing issues with TMG?

Exchange 2010-13 upgrade CoExistance & Autodiscover

Hi there,

We have been running Exchange 2010 for about 4 years we have 4 CAS servers in the environment, al of their AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri are set too:

cas1 - https://cas1.domain.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (actual hostname = cas1.domain.local)

cas2 - https://cas2.domain.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (actual hostname = cas2.domain.local)

cas3 - https://cas3.domain.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (actual hostname = cas3.domain.local)

cas4 - https://cas4.domain.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml (actual hostname = cas4.domain.local)

First of all you may be saying they are not set to  https://autodiscover.domain.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml, however we havent ever had a problem with client not connecting or resolving to their mailbox... We have 4 A records (using dns round robin) that point to an object called outlook.domain.org that resolve to each of the 4 CAS servers.

My question is based around the microsoft Exchange deployment assistant, specifically "configure service connection point" for the duration of the migration from 2010 to 2013 why can we not just change the A records in DNS to point to the new 2013 CAS boxes, we have deployed the same cert on the new servers and test mailboxes are working without any errors.

It says 2010 and 213 will proxy between depending on if your mailbox is on a new or old DB.

Or is it that you have to create a new object for the 2013 deployment, for example outlook2.domain.org and set the SCP object on every CAS 2010 server to the AutoDiscover URL of the new Exchange 2013 servers? As per the Deployment assistant process.

We would also need to create the DNS round robin a records for outlook2.domain.org for the new servers.

Have i understood this correctly, why cant i just use the same SCP name for the new servers.

Thanks!

Missing Meeting Updates

I have Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2016 all with latest patches.   When a user update/change meeting time, some of the attendant doesn't get the updated invite.  The user may have been using iPhone or Outlook.   CRA is enabled but I do not see any repairs....

What could be causing this?

Exchange 2013 Pickup Folder

Hey guys,

I have installed 3 new Exchange 2013 CU13 servers all in the same datacenter. We use RightFax which copies messages into the Pickup folder where Exchange processes it. On one of the three servers the messages just sit there and never get touched. The other two work fine. I am using a test message that works fine on two but the not the third. The only thing installed on the servers besides Exchange is RightFax.

I have uninstalled RightFax, tried disabling the transport agents, there is no anti-virus installed. I checked the NTFS permissions and they are the same on all the servers. The server was running CU12, I installed CU13. It just makes no sense. Anyone run into this before or have any ideas?

Thank you.

Message tracking log

Hi all, I like to understand when we use the command get-messagetrackinglog where does it get it's details from as i need to recover old emails logs.

Message tracking logs - mailbox server being decomm - Exchange 2013

Currently got 4 mailbox servers - call them A, B, C, and D.

All mailbox databases have been moved off A. All transport rules have been disabled on A,.
However, if you run message tracking query, obviously, there are log files on A pertaining to previous emails processed by A.

We now need to decommision server A. Problem is if we do this then surely we're losing all the message tracking logs off A? Admitedly, we're not getting any new messages processed by A but if we need to search tracking logs we're losing info if we turn off A.

Is there any way around this? Copying logs to one of the remaining servers etc?

Exchange 2010 - Copy/Sync Calendar to another mailbox automatically ?

We have a Split organization whew people have 2 Mail boxes so they can send email as another domain name.  There are two user account setup and two mailboxes setup and the users mounts the 2nd mailbox from the first account. They can send and receive emails from either account.

We want to not have 2 calendars. We only want the main account's Calendar.  So if someone external sends a calendar invite to the 2nd address I'd like a way to copy that calendar item to the primary calendar.

Given User A and User B, can you sync the Events of User B to User A’s Calendar?  Bonus if they Delete event on A and it also Deletes on B?

Seems like this could be done with EWS, though hoping for something with less programming involved.

Thanks!

Exchange AutoDiscover Help

I am playing around with exchange trying to learn how to set it up and get everything working Currently I have everything working except Auto discover. I can Access my OWA,ECP internally and Externally. Active Sync works(With manual Setup as Auto Discover doesn't work). I have an ARR Server serving multiple applications and I have exchange set up as a reverse proxy to get everything working and cant get auto discover to work.  I have a URL Rewrite set up as

Requested URL:        Using:

Match Pattern            Wildcard

pattern:

*

Conditions:

HTTPS      ON

HTTP_HOST autodiscover.FQDN.org

Action Type:

Route to Server Farm

Scheme:

https://   Server Farm Name /{R:0}

There is also one for http that is the same except without HTTPS    ON      and the Scheme point to http://

if I visit https://autodiscover.FQDN.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml I get an error 404 not found page

but if I visit http://autodiscover.FQDN.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml I can reach the xml page with a 600 response but I can at least reach it. It I Forward my 443 traffic straight to the exchange server it all works but then I cant reach my other applications because it no longer reaches the ARR server.

Without auto discover working I cant get outlook clients inside my network to work they just load profile for awhile before it Errors out and again if I forward all 443 traffic straight to the exchange server outlook works so my issues is with the ARR.  I cant figure out what's wrong the auto discover is set up the same way that I have it set to reach owa except it points to autodiscover.FQDN.org instead of mail.FQDN.org

Resource mailboxes in Hybrid setup

Hello,

We have an Exchange 2013/O365 hybrid setup and also use DirSync.

User accounts and 'shared mailboxaccounts' AD-objects are first created in AD and then synced with O365 with enable remote mailbox option.
In the meanwhile all our mailboxes are migrated to O365 and use EMC on-prem only to administer mailboxes

We now want to introduce resource mailboxes in our organization.

What is best practice ? Creating the AD-objects on-prem and enable remote mailbox so that this mailbox resides in O365 or creating this mailboxes directly in O365 and simplify management without corresponding AD-object on-prem? In this case we use a different scenario that we dit before by not managing the properties and permissions of this objects in the EMC.

Thanks for your advice.

Also, possibly to remove the message too.

Reminder use-case with Exchange?

$

Hello,

I have a use-case that I’m sure many people would like to accomplish as well, but I don’t see how to implement it in Exchange, or if it’s at all possible to do so.

Description of the use-case:
Need:
From time to time, I need to broadcast IT maintenance announcements through emails to everybody of the company.  For example, “such and such server will be shut down for a period of time”, or “Internet access will be unavailable for a period of time from some date-time to some date-time”, etc, etc.

Problem:
However, many people just don’t read the mail and are always asking why things are not working!

Wish:
1.    Sending out reminders directly to users’ calendars (without going through Inbox) so that people are reminded by their smartphones (which are sync’d with Exchange) or by their Outlook
2.    (Optional) The reminder disappears from the mailbox after the event
___________

I have of course thought about simply making a meeting with Outlook and send it to everybody, but there are a few problems:
1.    People can reject the “invitation” thinking it’s a meeting but actually it’s just a reminder

2.    I don’t want people to see the invitation in their mailbox because some users would consider this as nuisance or annoyance.  It would be nice if the reminder could “go” directly inside everyone’s calendar.

3.    I don’t want the “event” to look like everybody is busy during the elapsed time of the event.  But I think I could change the status to “Free”, right?

So, is this at all possible with Exchange?

TIA

Hi team,

We are planning for a shutdown of data center in our primary data center for a power activity,so i thought of instead of shutting down the exchange servers on primary site i will activate the database on DR exchnage server below is our setup.

Primary site has 2 mailbox server and 2 CAS server and DR site has one mailbox and one CAS server .

i plan to activate all the database to DR mailbox server and shut down the 2 mailbox and 2 CAS server in primary site,i am just worried while starting the server again in primary site after we finish the activity, the if there could be any network loss between primary site and DR site and the database may get activated in the primary site as well as DR site,

please let me know what is the best way and recommendation for this.

Regards

JAck.
