transport rule logging

Dear all!

We have an Exchange 2010 (i know it is old) server. We are using transport rule on hub transport servers, and one of the rule is now working. Can i get any clue where to find some log, why is the rule is not working? (It is working for most of the users). I double check the conditions and exceptions.

AttachmentTableTotalSize Increasing in Size for Journaling Mailbox Account

I've come across a weird instance where the journaling account we use to archive our email offsite has ballooned up the database but when you look at the mailbox statistics the mailbox size is normal but the AttachmentTableTotalSize is gigantic.  We have the mailbox policy set to purge Deleted Items every day but it doesn't seem to be clearing out attachments somehow.  I've tried googling what exactly the AttachmentTableTotalSize is but the results seem pretty limited.  Currently the only way I have been able to purge the mailbox is to migrate it do a different database and then migrate it back.  I'm running Exchange 2013 CU 20 and we first noticed the behavior back in CU 19.  I'm wondering if anyone else has come across this and has a better solution than just migrating the mailbox back and forth between databases.

Manually deleting Exchange 2007 out of a 2007-2013 coexistence for future upgrades

I have a dead Exchange 2007 server running Server 2008 (not R2) and Exchange 2007 with SP3 Ru21.

I've tried running a setup.com /m:recoverserver in a test environment with virtual machines and the install failed.

Exchange 2007 server was also a DC.

My current plan:

Try recovery install:

  • Delete old Exchange from AD users and computers
  • Promote temp 2007 server to DC.
  • Try recovery install of 2007 via setup.com /m:recoverserver
  • Uninstall 2007
  • Demote DC.
If Recovery install doesn't work:
  • Reload temp 2007 from backup
  • Promote temp 2007 to DC
  • Delete from AD using adsiedit.msc - offline address book without ex2013, old 2007 server
  • Run clean install of exchange 2007.
  • Install Ru21 exchange update
  • Uninstall exchange 2007 via setup.com /m:uninstall
  • Demote DC

Will the method I proposed via adsiedit.msc eliminate any entries from the old exchange 2007 server from AD?

Will deleting the offline address book affect my exchange 2013 server in any way? Is the offline address book with ex2013 definitely the one associated with exchange 2013?

Will this eliminate any complications when upgrading exchange 2013 to 2016?

Besides the offline address book and the server from adsiedit.msc, are there other entries I can manually delete or know the locations of to confirm deletion when uninstalling 2007?

Exchange OWA Brute Force Attack

Dear Microsoft Support,

Our client has an exchange server system integrated with ADFS for authentication. The Exchange users can sign-in Outlook Web Apps (OWA) via Internet to use email. This outside Exchange users sign-in OWA need to be secondly authenticated via Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) by mobile device approval.

The ADFS also connected several web system for authentication.

 

Recently, the Exchange system encountered Brute Force attack, since we found some Exchange users accounts were temporarily locked due to continuous trial to sign-in OWA from Internet side. After 3-5 attempt to sign-in Exchange, the Email account was temporarily locked for 30 minutes. However, after the account locked period, the attack continued.

 

I would like to know if there is any method or best practice to defend this kind of attack without interrupting User’s daily use?

Currently, we impose a measure to block the IP address that were found in ADFS. Thanks.

OST and Recover Deleted Items folder

Does OST (Outlook cache mode) also include all emails in "Recover deleted items" folder?  I have a few users who are under litigation hold for many years so there is no deletion by Exchange retention policy.  Users have been manually cleaning up emails from each folder then clean up Deleted items.  Or shift+delete.  The "Recover deleted items" folder contains large amount of emails.  I checked their mailbox properties under EMC.  They are over 50 GB.  I know we have extended their recover deleted items folder before (> default 20 GB).  They want to change from Outlook online mode to cache mode.  But I'm afraid that it could exceed the 50 GB limit, if it includes the recover deleted items folder.  Can someone confirm if OST contains it?

Is In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold works on Drafts folder?

Hi,

Suppose the below scenario.

1. We have applied the Litigation hold to a particular mailbox is user able to delete that draft message from the draft folder. I know if we delete the draft message it came to deleted item. Then litigation hold also applied please correct me if I am wrong.

2. We have applied In-Place hold but user open a message from drafts and delete its contents after that he deleted the draft message what will be the scenario on that case.

Report based on recipient/sender domains (Top 20 or 50 Domains)

I have been trying to create a new email for the last two days. I go through all the steps and at the end before Outlook opens the new email account I get this message!

However, if I try to get int outlook or hotmail using the same computer to open another email account, instead of getting the logon interface, I get the same :( Something went wrong - We can't get information right now. Please try later! and won't let me log on to hotmail or outlook!

How do I flush this from the browser or cache, so that I can access my other hotmail accounts from this computer?

Question regarding Exchange 2007 Recover Server Failure in a 2007-2013 Coexistence

I have a dead Exchange 2007 SP3 with Rollout update 21 in a 2007-2013 coexistence.

I downloaded an Exchange 2007 SP3 ISO from MS but it is an earlier version.

When running the setup.com /M:recoverserver for exchange 2007, how can I install SP3 with Rollout update 21?

Is it necessary for the ISO being used to be the same version as the original 2007 installation?

In a test environment, having the RU21 update in the update folder caused the install to fail.

Regardless of the RU21 update, the recover server install fails in the test environment.  Are there any common causes for a recover server failure?

Exchange 2013 - Public Folder Appointment - Free/Busy Error

Hello,

i migrated an Exchange 2010 Server (single Server with all Roles) to a Exchange 2013 CAS Cluster (2x Exchange 2013 Multi-Role Servers).

After migrating the Public Folders from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 User reported me that they are not able to open/redirect/accept/decline an meeting which was send to a mail-enabled Public Folder.

For Explaination: Some departments have a own Public Folder (e. g. "HR-Department"). Other Exchange Users creating a meeting and send it to this PF. A Secretary takes a look at this meeting and redirect it to the correct User.
Using Outlook i am getting the Error "Free/Busy Information not available" in the down right corner.
Using OWA i also getting similar error (not able to check conflict between your calendar and this meeting) but i am still able to redirect/open/accept the metting-request.

Free/Busy Information between normal Exchange Users works without any issues.
Calender Permission for Default is set to "Read" for "Free/busy time".
Meanwhile i have checked Event Log and all settings and don't know, where the Problem is. It seems that the Public Folder (or Public Folder Mailbox) want's to read the Free/Busy Information of the User who tries to open the Meeting-Request.

If someone has any idea how to analyse this issue, please help.
I translated the error Message from a german Exchange Installation. So i may be possible that the original englisch error are a little bit different.

Random emails sent disappears form sent items.

Few users complaining that some of the emails they sent previously not appears in Sent items now. It happens to random emails.No specific patterns, no connection between these emails. Checked on OWA sent folder the emails not shows up there as well. suggestions?

Low Disk Space

Hello, support team!

I have an MS Exchange virtual server,

It's showing a very low disk space.

I have checked its temp files, its more than 63 GB.

1. Is it safe to delete all these 63 GB temp files?

2. Is there any software which can check the necessary files in server and delete the waste files automatically/manually?

Outlook Anywhere 404 error after replacing domaincontroller

Hi all,

We changed our physical domain controller with a virtual one, same ip address, different hostname.
No issues whatsoever, only thing is, Outlook Anywhere keeps asking for user credentials for external users, after providing them, the popup just keeps coming back. We use NTLM authentication. When I check IIS logs on the MX server I see the response is a 404 when the end user tried to reach the rpc page.

Internally everything works perfect. Wireshark shows the same 404 response.

Do you guys have any ideas ?

I was advised to post in the Technet forums as an Outlook user on an Exchange Server, but to my mind the available forums are aimed at IT Professionals. This is not meant to be a criticism - I just want to find the right place to post my question.

In Outlook 2013, when I hover People, the program suggests right-clicking a contact to add to Favorites. What benefits does this bring?

Primary Active Manager Down in Exchange 2013

Hi All,

I have 2 Exchange Server and both installed CAS and Mailbox Access roles.

And i have DAG configured in both servers for Mailbox server HA. And Enabled Replication for our Databases.

My Question is:

What will going to happen if Primary Active Manager is going down in 2 node exchange server?

How to we make sure all our Exchange client connectivity and Mail flow is happening from Second Exchange server?
