Exchange 2013 (lab): emails stuck in OWA Drafts

$

Hello I have setup for testing purposes an Exchange 2013 CU5 on a 2012R2 which is also DC and DNS.Network wise I have two virtual interfaces one for the internal network (10.10.10.x/24) and another one linked to the Ethernet physical interface of my computer which gets its properties from DHCP (usually my gateway router).

Everything seem to work normally but when I try to send emails to the outside world I only get a copy of it inside the Drafts folder. :-)

I thoroughly checked the DNS service (inside the Exchange too), A, PTR records and SOA, I tested the DNS server and nslookuped some internet addresses all resolving fine. The DNS service registers both interfaces DNS servers (the internal one which is the DC and the external one which comes through DHCP).

Through Test-ServiceHealth in Exchange Management Shell I checked all required services are up and running.

With Setspn -Lhostname  I verified all required services are registered correctly on my server.

I also checked Event Viewer and besides some performance counters errors about exchange nothing else in there too.

I haven't registered an MX record because I don't need to receive mail just to send in that  early stage.Am I right in that?

Any ideas are welcome and thanks in advance.

Assistance with distribution group behavior

We have a new Exchange 2013 server.  So far, we are happy with it, except for this one issue with distribution groups.

On our old, non-Microsoft mail server, we had mailing lists.  When someone sent an email to the list, the members of the list would receive an email that was listed as "From:mailinglist@ourcompany.com on behalf of user@ourcompany.com".  We like this behavior because it allows people to easily see who the messages posted on a mailing list came from, but when hitting reply, the reply would go back to the mailing list, and ***NOT*** the user that sent the email being replied to.

In Exchange 2013, distribution groups function differently.  If a user sends an email todistributiongroup@ourcompany.com, our users see a message that is listed as "From: user@ourcompany.com" and "To: distributiongroup@ourcompany.com".  If a user hits reply to this message, the reply by default goes to the original send and NOT the entire list.  We do NOT like this behavior and wish to change it.

Hitting Reply All when viewing emails from a distribution group is not a viable option...our users will not remember to do that and it will create confusion.

So, to recap, what we want to see when User A send an email to Distribution Group A, then all other users should receive an email that is "From:DistributionGroupA@ourcompany.com on behalf of UserA@ourcompany.com".  When our users hit reply to this message, the reply's To: field should, by default, be filled in withDistributionGroupA@ourcompany.com and notUserA@ourcompany.com.

How can we accomplish this?

Auto-Mapping Exchange 2013 Mailboxs in an Exchange 2010 Mailbox

We're in the middle of migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. Many of our users have Auto-Mapped mailboxes as well. In my testing, I've found that I cannot Auto-Map a mailbox that's on Exchange 2013 in a Exchange 2010 mailbox. I can manually add it and it works fine. Is this by design with this type of coexistence or is there a fix for it? Our current Exchange 2010 environment is at SP3 with UR2.

Unable to open calendar if target user is offline.

Hi,

When trying to open the calendar of one of our users, a message box appears saying "Cannot display the folder. You do not have permission to log on.".  This only happens when the target user is offline, but it affects all other users; when he is online the calendar works without a problem.

The client is Outlook 2007, I have checked the calendar folder permissions and Default is set to Reviewer.

Thanks

Due to our organization policy, we want to disable "Originating IP" like (X-Received and X-Originating-IP) function in our Exchange 2013 for all internal & external senders, now I have noticed that when the employees are sending to each others within the organization, no "X-Originating-IP" is added to the message, but when they send from their Internet mobile devices, that field shows up.

Any idea how to disable that?

Exchange 2003 / AD permissions

$

So we are moving from Ex2k3, to 2010... the only problem I have is that for some odd reason, my FSO (Field Security Officer) needs to see some verbiage from MS or anyone else for that matter, defining the permissions of the Exchange Enterprise Server (EES) group in AD.

So here's the issue:  The concern is the level of permission the EES group has on the Domain Controllers OU in AD.  When the permission set is viewed in AD, the ESS group does not appear to have any other permission outside of Read and List. However, when looking at the Advanced Security Settings feature, for the Domain Controller OU, the EES group has a special "Write Property" list under permissions.   When selecting any of the entries for EES with "Write Property", and clicking the "Edit" button, no permissions are selected i.e. of all the possible permissions that could be set; none of them are selected or have check mark in the boxes corresponding to the available permission.   So the question is: What if any, permissions do the Exchange Enterprise Server group have on the objects listed in the Domain Controllers OU?

For sh$ts and giggles, I looked at the same permission group on a 2k8 server, and the write permission does not show up.

Thanks in advance!!! for any help provided...

Active Directory Administrators and Exchange Administrators and the MAIL field....

Can someone help me understand why Microsoft has a MAIL field visible in Active Directory Users and Computers that isn't visible in Microsoft Exchange Console?

In my organization we have separate Active Directory administrators and Exchange administrators and this has caused a lot of frustration.   Active Directory administrators feel that they should type in an e-mail address for an object that is going to be mail enabled, in our environment if that is done, the Exchange console can no longer see the item.   Is this something unusual in our environment or is the the expected behavior?

Signed, a frustrated e-mail admin who has to constantly contact Active Directory administrators and have them clear out the MAIL attribute of objects before I can mail enable it.

Hi all

Are there any important risks that you can think of when upgrading exchange 2007 to 2013?
Will be doing it soon and just making sure all is in order.

Autodiscover, non-domain joined

$

Hey,

Internal domain: corp.domain.com
External domain: domain.com
Mail server: mailserver.corp.domain.com
Autodiscover url: autodiscover.domain.com

Internal DNS FL Zones: corp.domain.com (internal) and domain.com (external) (both with matching RL zones)

Public DNS: A record autodiscover.domain.com pointing to x.x.x.x (bound on firewall, which is published to Exchange server)
Internal DNS, external zone: CNAME autodiscover.domain.com pointing to mailserver.corp.domain.com
SVR Record: _autodiscover / 443 / autodiscover.domain.com

This means the same url is accessible both internall and externally.

If the device is domain-joined and a user logs on externally (cached credentials), autodiscover works OK. If the device is not domain joined, and the user configures Outlook and provides credentials, autodiscover does not work - they just get stuck in a continuous credentials prompt loop. If I check the settings of the account it's trying to connect to mailserver.corp.domain.com which of course doesn't exist on the internet? Surely it needs to be autodiscover.domain.com?

At this screen, I get prompted for credentials, which required domain\Username format. This works as can be seen by all the ticks:

If I click Change account settings, this is what I see:

So I click finish, restart Outlook, then it's straight to the credentials prompt loop. If I press Cancel then OK at the credentials prompt, I get this (next post):

Mailbox database Size

$

Hi,

I have DAG enabled Exchange Server 2010 installed with three mailbox databases having sizes 282GB,162GB and 129GB respectively. I have started with a total of 250GB in 2010 and now it has reached a size more than 650GB.

It has become very difficult to take the backup of such huge database files now and restoring it in case of a DR.

Presently I have not enabled online archiving in any of these mailboxes mainly because most of the PCs are installed with outlook 2007 which doesn't show online archive.Of course OWA is another candidate to see those mails.

Please suggest a best practice to reduce the size of these mailbox databases without losing any of the mails.

Thanks

Thomas

New Edge server fails with DNS lookups - incoming mail stuck in queue

$

I just setup an Edge server, together with 2 Ex2013 servers with DAG. Sync works fine, however incoming mails are stuck at the edge server. The queue looks like this:

451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was: DNS query failed with error ErrorRetry

Checking the logs, it also shows errors like this:

2014-07-12T16:32:06.599Z,08D16C05D02E2774,SMTP,"ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com",>,DNS server returned ErrorRetry reported by 0.0.0.0. [Domain:Result] = EX2.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry; EX3.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry; EX4.internal.contoso.com:ErrorRetry;
2014-07-12T16:32:06.599Z,08D16C05D02E2774,SMTP,"ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com",-,"Messages: 0 Bytes: 0 (The DNS query for 'SmartHostConnectorDelivery':'ex2.internal.contoso.com,ex3.internal.contoso.com,ex4.internal.contoso.com':'e01d6f93-e25b-4e36-9f2f-c1c7c73889ae' failed with error : ErrorRetry)"

Now the network is a little special, as the edge server is not in DMZ, but simply in a workgroup in the same LAN as the other Exchange servers. The edge server NIC's are configured to use the internal AD DNS servers, and the edge server is able to lookup all the other exchange servers (ie. ex2.internal.contoso.com).

So I wonder why the edge servers logs DNS lookup errors as long as the server it self can lookup the internal hostnames for Exchange.

Any help would be great, as all incoming mail is now stuck at the edge server.

Blocking external access to some calendars

$

Hello everyone. I am currently running Exchange 2010, and just setup external internet calendar sharing (ICS).   I am trying to setup sharing for our meeting rooms as well, but I want to block external access to these sites.  I know that if I use the private setting, then the URL becomes the aStrEArteaT@hostname instead of mettingroom1@hostname, but if this URL is ever shared externally, I want to be able to block it.  I do want this available internally so that we can use the web page version for some systems we are setting up. Is this something I can block within Exchange or IIS, or is there something else that can be set up within Exchange without having to share the calendar within Outlook?

I hope all this makes sense.  Thank you in advance for your help.

432 4.2.0 STOREDRV.Deliver; Agent transient failure during message resubmission

I am having an issue where emails to specific users internal to internal are being successfully delivered, but [a duplicate is?] also getting stuck in the "SMTP Delivery to mailbox" queue, with the sender getting a "Delivery is delayed to these recipients or groups:" "Remote Server returned '400 4.4.7 Message delayed" This only happens with emails to specific people in the organization, they get the email immediately after being sent, and everyone else works fine. This issue started after we migrated the users mailboxs from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 CU5, we did not notice the issue until we finished moving all user mailboxes to 2013.

Update 7/2/14:

Checked event viewer, and found that event ID 1051, erroring multiple times per second with message:

"Agent 'Mailbox Rules Agent' caused an unhandled exception 'StoreDriverAgentTransientException: Store Driver Agent was unable to send email.' while handling event 'OnDeliveredMessage'"

Ran Test-MailFlow on my mailbox, and the two know non-working mailboxes, For me it returned as successful, but showed as a Failure on the two other accounts.

The test emails were actually delivered to the user mailboxes even though it shows as a Failure with the Test-MailFlow command:

From Exchange Queue viewer you can see the test emails stuck in retry, with the following information:
