Exchange 2013 and AD (global catalog) issues

$

I have Exchange 2013 (minimal install and all roles are on a single server) on-premises running on a Windows 2012 R2 server (both Windows and Exchange are patched and up-to-date). Basically this system serves as our on-premises hybrid for Office 365 stuff and on-premises SMTP. This server is a VM.

Our AD is at 2008 R2 level and we have a few DC (all of them are GC’s). I am trying to remove a DC from the network but when I shut the DC down, my Exchange server has issues. When I removed the GC from the DC and turned the DC server off, I rebooted my Exchange 2013 VM and I wasn’t able to RDP to it. Luckily it is a VM and I could log on to it using VM tools.  When the DC is powered down, I look at the network on the Exchange server and I see that there are no networks available within Windows (location awareness issue maybe?). If I power the DC back up and make it a GC again, the Exchange server works fine (there are other GC’s on the network and associated with this site in AD). I would think that Exchange 2013 should detect that the DC is offline and it should choose another GC but it isn’t. So I tried to exclude the DC that I want to shut down in Exchange (by using the Set-ExchangeServer cmdlet with the StaticExcludedDomainControllers parameter) and that broke the server completely. Once I did that and tried to reboot the Exchange server (it didn’t matter whether the DC/GC was running or not), I couldn’t get Exchange working again. Now there is nothing available in the network connections on the Windows 2012 R2 server side (I guess that is why Exchange services are failing). However, I can ping the server, I can browse network file shares from the server, and other network stuff all from the Windows 2012 R2 server, I just can’t RDP to the server and I can’t get Windows to recognize a network from the server. And now because there is no network connection, I can’t even open the Exchange Management Shell to undo what I did (because EMS cannot get WinRM to work without a network connection) so EMS can’t communicate with the Exchange server and therefore it fails.  When the EMS was working, the Get-ExchangeServer cmdlet showed the DC as the OriginatingServer also.

I am now in the process of performing a restore from last night’s backup and hoping that works. I can’t figure out why turning off the DC / GC would cause Windows 2012 R2 to lose the network connection and/or cause Exchange 2013 to not work? And why would Set-ExchangeServer cause this same issue?  Is there any known reason for this occurring?  What is the proper method to remove a DC/GC from an Exchange 2013 environment?

Thanks

Migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 - Outlook cannot connect and OWA always redirects to legacy

I recently set up an Exchange 2013 server in order to migrate our Exchange 2007 mailboxes over. In DNS I have a 'mail' ecord that points to our new Exchange 2013 server. I also created a 'legacy' record that points to the 2007 server.  We also have a local CA and I generated an exchange certificate with this CA and installed in the 2013 Exchange server. Autodiscover SEEMS to be working. Errors I get:
On a migrated account - using Outlook to create a brand new profile-
"Outlook cannot log on. Verify you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
On an account that only exists on the new Exchange 2013 box - new profile:
'The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
In OWA:
Trying to login with the Exchange 2013 only account it seems to try and login, sits and thinks about it for awhile and then the URL switches to the legacy URL. The login obviously fails with a "This page cannot be displayed" error.

Note from above the DNS alias 'mail' is the new server. So if I ping 'mail' I get replies from new server, nslookup shows new server also. But if I do :
nslookup mail.my.domain.name
it fires back :
Name: mail.my.domain.name.my.domain.name
Address: <address of OLD 2007 Exchange>
I would think this nslookup would show the NEW Exchange 2013 machine?

PLEASE HELP! If you need for information I will do my best!

I can migrate a mailbox fine from exchange 2010 sp2 update rollup 8 to exchange 2013 sp1 or Cu2.

I was testing today migrating cross forest from 2010 sp2 udpate rollup 8 back to exchange 2010 sp2 but I get the below error.  Is this even possible?  I cannot find any documentation on this scenario yet.

MRS Migration From Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2010

I'm trying to do a remote mailbox move, from an Exchange 2013 SP1 org to an Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 7 one. However I'm presented with the error message The remote server doesn't support client 'Exch1.fabrikam.com' version (14.3.178.0 caps:05FEFF). Missing functionality: 'TenantHint'. Exch1.fabrikam.com is the name of the CAS server in the Exchange 2010 org.

The cmdlet being used is: New-MoveRequest -Identity frank -Remote -RemoteCredential $RemoteCredentials -RemoteGlobalCatalog dc1.contoso.com -TargetDatabase Global1 -TargetDeliveryDomain fabrikam.com -Verbose -RemoteHostName Exch1.contoso.com.

There is also a similar thread here, but it never got solved.

Although I'm finding it hard to believe - is this something that's not officially supported ?

Adding groups as Senders on a Distribution Group in Exchange 2013

I have a Distribution Group setup in Exchange 2013, let's call it Group1.  It is set so that only members of the group can send emails to the group, plus our three IT administrators.  Thus, the group members receive emails on the list and can send, while our IT admins can send to the list if needed, but don't receive messages from the list.

To accomplish this, I went in ECP and went to Recipients -> Groups -> Edit Distribution Group in question -> Delivery Management.  Here I added Group1 as an authorized sender (so that, by default, all group members can send to the group) and then added the names of our IT staff.

What I would like to know is if it's possible to add a security group as authorized senders?  Such as Domain Admins, or a security group I create myself.  It would be cleaner to be able to specify an administrator group so that as staffing changes, I can just change group membership instead of editing the authorized senders for all our distribution groups.

Meeting request has wrong organiser

$

Sometimes meeting requests get the wrong organiser.

A secretary is delegate for serveral managers. She created a meeting in the calander of one manager, and invited serveral others (a few from outside the company, one from our company).

In the organisers calander all seems fine, but for some reason the "invited" manager gets the request in his inbox as a meeting where "he is the organiser". So Outlook does not put the meeting in his calander, because "he is the organiser", and he cannot respond (you guessed it) because he is the organiser.

Does anyone know what is happening here?

after migrating a few users to ex2013 their clients have 8e758aef-9c56-4f46-ab64-4a46a72f0f08 in the server name field. creating a new profile does not fix either.

most of them are connecting to the server but it odd to see that instead of true name.
