Mail-disable a security group?

Found this document which seems to refer to 2010.

What we want to do is create new distribution groups based on some legacy security groups. Would rather not just convert them just in case we lose security functionality. So plan is to create new ones.

But then we don't want two identical groups in exchange (although one could be hidden from GAL). Better if we could split the security group from exchange completely.

Will this work - doesnt really say if its just distribution groups :-

Disable-DistributionGroup -Identity "Employee Garage Sales".

reconnecting a disconnected mailbox

Exchange 2013 cu4

back in Exchange 2010, it is quite easy to reconnect a disconnected mailbox using a GUI tool.

now in 2013, we have to do it via powershell (seems backwards to me).

anyway, i tried all i know to list disconnected mailboxes

Get-MailboxStatistics -Database MB01 | fl DisplayName,MailboxGuid

Get-MailboxStatistics -Database MB01 | fl DisplayName,MailboxGuid | out-string -stream | select-string Mickey

but none of them showed it. am very sure the mailbox was deleted less than 30 days and our retention policy is the default.

could there be another way to list disconnected mailboxes?

Understanding Network for Exchange 2013

Hello All..........I am looking for recommended/suggested number of NICs and/or Networks for Mailbox Servers in a DAG.

1.  Would it be good practice to Team two-2 NICs to increase throughput?

2.  Would it be a good practice for Virtual Servers?

3.  Would separate MAPI and REPLICATION networks be recommended/suggested?

4.  Should we Team both MAPI and REPLICATION networks?

5.  What is recommended/suggested if two-2 separate physical network paths are available between Mailbox Servers (In case of DAG stretching across sites). 

5A.  Keeping above (5.) in mind, if we use two-2 networks, how they should be configured i.e. one for MAPI and one for REPLICATION? in that case should REPLICATION network be stretched across sites as it never carries gateway? or there should be two-2 MAPI networks only?

6.  I would also appreciate if someone could share any link to article/blog where I could read about different scenarios and recommendation for networks such as physical severs against virtual servers and single network path and multiple network etc.

Can't access OWA or EWS on Exchange 2013 CU2

Hello,

Yesterday we upgraded Exchange 2013 RTM to CU2. Upgrade process went smoothly and without error. 

After the upgrade and reboot, however, users cannot login to Outlook no more (endless login loop), and OWA shows this error:

A mailbox couldn't be found for NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. 

ECP works fine, however.

I tried recreating virtual folders, checked permissions etc. Nothing seems to work.
Also, there's nothing of importance in event logs, so I'm pretty much stuck.

Understanding Database Requirements

Hello All.........I have some questions regarding Exchange Database; would appreciate if someone could make understand them:

1.  If I have two-2 MBX Servers and I want to create one-1 Database on each server e.g. DB01 of 100 GB on MBX1 and DB02 of 100 GB on MBX2.  And want to keep the passive copy of each database to the other than how many total LUNs I will need to create and how much Disk Space I would be needing?

2.  What is the concept of Archiving Databases?  What are the benefits? What is recommended size of Archiving Databases?

3.   What is the concept of Restore Volume?  What are the benefits?  What is recommended size of such a volume?  Is it a Database or just a LUN? 


4.  What should be size of Log LUN for each DB?

Adding Exchange 2013 CU10 to Existing CU6

Hello All........I have an existing environment running Exchange 2013 CU6 with two-2 CAS and two-2 MBX. I want to add new servers that is two-2 CAS and two-2 MBX based on Exchange 2013 CU10. I have following questions:

1.  Where should I start from; build CAS Servers first or MBX Servers first?

2.  While installing what permissions my account should have?

3.  While installing, would I be asked to joing to existing exchange organization?  If so, what options should I select so that it does not affect existing environment?

4.  Would it in any way cause any distress to the existing environment?

5.  Would adding CAS add additional connectors to the organization and would the new CAS servers be also handing traffic?

6.  Would I need to generate new certificate request for new CAS Servers or I can just import old CAS Servers certificate?

7.  Would I be needed to set the same internal and external URL as old CAS Servers?

8.  Can I set the same internal and external URL to the new CAS Servers as old CAS Servers?  Would it affect in negative way?

9.  Can I delete the default databases that get created on new MBX?

Hello........I am running Exchange 2013 Organization with Exchange 2010 Edge Servers (Two-2). I want to cut over E-Mail from Exchange 2010 Edge Servers to UTM.

1.  What do I need to take into consideration before migration?

2.  Would I be needing downtime?

3.  What do I need to migrate?  Accepted Domains, Relays, Connectors?

Exchange 2010/2013 to Exchange 2013 CU9 Migration

Hello All..........I have an environment where I have Exchange 2010 SP3 across three-3 sites.  There is also Exchange 2013 CU6 at the Primary site that is also the site which is internet facing.  I want to do following:

1.  Install Exchange 2013 CU9 at the Main Site with Two-2 MBX and Two-2 CAS

2.  Install Exchange 2013 CU9 at other two sites with Two-2 Servers (MBX and CAS combined)

Questions:

1.  Should I take it as a normal installation and configuration for transition or there is something that I need to take into consideration?

2.  Is there any step by step article with that regards which can be helpful in creating such an environment?

3.  Would I need to run Forest and Domain Prep?

4.  I would be building IP-Less DAG between Sites, so any guide with that respect would also be appreciated.

MX Record Configuration Understanding

Hello All..........If following is my MX Record Configuration:

10  mail.abc.com    1.1.1.1

10  mail.abc.com    1.1.1.2

20  mail2.abc.com  1.1.1.3

30  mx2.isp.net      1.1.1.4

Can someone explain how this might be working?  How traffic would be coming in?  in case of failure of one how things would be moving forward?

Can't access OWA by Exchange 2013 in a mixed environment with Exchange 2007

I'm with the follows problem: I can't open any mailbox from Exchange 2013 and from Exchange 2007 accessing by Exchange 2013 - OWA. I receive the message: 

something went wrong

When I try to open a Mailbox from Exchange 2013 accessing by OWA (Exchange 2007), I receive the following message:

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.

Obs:.Accessing mailbox from Exchange 2007 by the OWA from the Exchange 2007 no problem.

Obs2:. the ECP is working.

Anybody has a suggestion?

Exchange 2013 CU6 to CU10 with UM Integration in Place

Hello All.........My Exchange Server 2013 CU6 environment CAS Servers are integrated with Lync Server 2013 for Voice Mail and Auto Attendant. I want to Install two-2 new CAS servers which would be based on CU10.

My questions are as follows"

1.  Would it be a normal install for new CAS CU10 Servers or I need to take into consideration regarding UM Dial Plans, UM IP Gateways and UM Servers?

2.  Would it cause any issues with existing configuration if I bring new CAS CU10 up?

3.  What would be the best time to install CAS CU10?  I would also be building new MBX Servers so should I migrated mailboxes first before introducing CAS CU10 Servers?  So, I can easily shift system mailboxes, etc.

4.  What I should have in hand before installing CAS CU10?

5.  Would I be needing to configure Dial Plans, UM IP Gateways and UM Servers again?

6.  Should I first update existing CAS to CU10 before starting new CAS CU10 Servers?

Impact on TLS and other Exchange services as per the new notification from Microsoft (certificates using SHA-1 no longer trusted) !!

Hi all,

I happen to receive a notification from Microsoft about the validity of certificates using an outdated hashing mechanism. It seems, as per 1-1-2016, certificates using SHA-1 and have a validity date beyond 1-1-2017 will no longer be trusted, by companies like Microsoft and Google.

My company environment uses two certificates one for TLS communication and another one for internal services using SHA1 signing algorithm but the expiry date is not beyond1-1-2017.

It will be great if some one could let me know how TLS and other Exchange services are expected to be impacted ? Thank you in advance. :)

Recovery tools - edb restore gui

Does anyone know of any (preferably free) edb mailbox recovery gui tools?

I am backing up exchange to edb and log files and think the recovery database method of restoring is so painful...

is there a gui tool out there that can just crack the edb open and extract or pst the required info?

Public folders only for one user not visible in organization

hi people , 

i'm having a strange problem with one of our servers : 

we have a on-premises server with public folders configured.

all users are able to see the public folders except for one.

i triple checked the permissions on the public folder and there is a group with the user in it.

even when i add the user separately , i stil can't see the public folder.

when i try to add the public folder with OWA  , i get following message :

(it is dutch so i'm gone try to translate)

cannot fulfill your request.

there are no public folders available.

check if public folders are implemented in the exchange organization.

is there a way i can manually configure public folder settings in ADSI or in the AD attributes ?

How to configure Auto Response on emails received to specific SMTP domain Exchange 2010 power shell

Dear All,

Sorry for posting question in E2K13 Forum. 

I have Exchange 2010 SP3 setup. 

I recently changed primary email addresses of all users from @abc.com to @xyz.com. But both SMTP domains email address are stamped on each user.

All, i want is if someone outside the organization send email to any user @abc.com should receive a auto response. If outsider sending email to same user on @xyz.com should not receive auto-response. 

I need to apply these for bulk users. Also, i want while sending auto response, the response should be customized for each user stating his email address is changed from firstname.lastname@abc.com to firstname.lastname@xyz.com.

Auto response should not be generic one. it has to spcify the from and to email address for each user. 

is this possible using powershell script?

Exchange 2013 cu10 resource mailbox confirmation messages not being send

We have 56 rooms. Suddenly when we book a room no confirmation was send. Also booking when there is a conflict (double booking for example) or book a room request out of policy no confirmation or rejecting was send to organisator.

Please help
